Its a nuance that is difficult to understand, that’s for sure. Generally, ‘jene’ implies more distance than ‘diese’. ‘Dieser Hut ist schöner als jener Hut’ for example, here you’d refer to a hat someone is wearing at this moment in comparison to a hat someone wore earlier/a hat that lies on the shelf.
