I don’t have any information about context here and you may know this already, but it might help someone anyway:
In French, “pont” can be used to mean both deck (boat) and bridge.
Nous marchions sur le pont (du bateau). / We were walking on the deck.
Nous marchions sur le pont. / We were walking on the bridge.
