I found the “vi” interesting, I hadn’t noted it before.

It is apparently indeed used similarly to “ci”, as per wiktionary, albeit with slightly more formal connotations as per treccani:

"vi (treccani")
  1. Avverbio di luogo equivalente a ivi (in questo o in quel luogo, là, e per estens. in ciò, a ciò), usato con verbi di stato e di moto; equivale al più com. ci1 (v.), ma è di tono più formale:
    vi rimase per due anni; non vi è, o non v’è, differenza; prese una sedia e vi si mise a sedere; si accostò alla scrivania e vi posò sopra la cartella; vi passa vicino la ferrovia
    (e con valore più esplicito di moto per luogo: non vi passa quasi nessuno, perché è una via mal frequentata).

Although I also found this article about the difference between the two, but am not sure how to really interpret that.

Yes, the vi threw me too. I read the explanation but only understood every third word;-) so I’ll try to learn hands-on as it were and take it as being more formal and very much intended for Vi and not Ci.
