It’s not as if everyone doesn’t have one.

Can someone help me understand the usage of “avessero” in this sentence? Why is the English translation “does not have one” rather than “did not have one” since it’s congiuntivo imperfetto?

I believe it’s a set pattern that come se is always followed by congiuntivo imperfetto, regardless of time frame.
