Exactly, because “ballerino” just simply comes from “ballare” 
It’s more our association due to the usage of “ballerina” in other languages as you say, because technically even in Italian “ballerina” could just be used to refer to any dancing female, though still predominantly in the professional sense (but not restricted to classical ballet - in fact, generally additional adjectives will be used to clarify what kind of dancer it seems).
