Noi avremmo fatto meglio a chiamare la polizia.

English Translation

We had better call the police.

Agreed, I wonder if this might’ve been an attempt at a more literal interpretation of the English sentence. In addition to the two versions of the current Italian translation (with and without “noi”), there is also “Faremmo meglio a chiamare la polizia”, which to me does actually match the English source sentence much better.

Ciao. I read it as “We would have done better to call the police” so it’s interesting to read your thinking. Same meaning I suppose as “we should have…”

@Floria7: Not being a native English speaker, I chose the most straight-forward translation I could think of.

I prefer the present translation. This is a learning exercise. “We should have called the police” does not help the student remember that meglio means better, or that a chiamare mean to call, not have called.
