Here, “neue Geschichten” is translated “news stories”, but I thought this meant “new stories”, not news. Is this an error, or am I missing something?

You’re correct, ‘neue Geschichten’ means ‘new stories’. ‘News’ would be Nachrichten.

The translation now says “new stories” as you suggested.
Also, @morbrorper reported this on Tatoeba, so this sentence is now orphaned (i.e. the old “news stories” sentence is no longer linked).
