any particular reason why wybierać is being used here? If I had to choose one though, I would have gone for wybrać, seeing it is a one time choice: to go or to stay. Is there some specific reason the imperfective aspect is being used?

Both “wybrać” and “wybierać” sound good to me here.

I’d say “wybierać” makes it sound like the decision was difficult and required some consideration, while “wybrać” sounds more like the decision was made on the spot.
