Would “Mit wem sprichst du?” also be appropriate here. Or is there a subtle difference between reden and sprechen that I don’t understand?
It’s more or less the same difference between english talk (reden) and speak (sprechen). Both work here.
I guess since the english used “talk”, the german translator picked “reden”.
