Minulla on sunnuntai vapaata.

English Translation

I’m free on Sunday.

How does this sentence fit together grammatically? I had expected “sunnuntaina” for “on Sunday”.

I think with “Minulla on”, sunnuntai is essentially a nominative subject.

If you rearrange the sentence to a more recognizable SVO order:
Sunnuntai on vapaata (minulla).

Basically, the finnish sentence does not literally say
“I have free on sunday” which would be something like “Minulla on vapaata sunnuntaina”.
Instead it says “With me, the sunday is free.”

That’s how I see it, but I’m also only a learner, so some input from a native would be nice.

I can see now that there’s a parallel translation: “Minulla on vapaata sunnuntaina.” Given the free word order of Finnish, I think "“Minulla on sunnuntaina vapaata” would also be correct, albeit with a different grammar breakdown.
