Miała na sobie piękną suknię. (Sentence Note & Question)

  • suknia (female noun) = gown (e.g. wedding gown)
  • sukienka (female noun) = dress

Can anyone tell me … am I correct here? Sukienka would be generic term for a dress, but suknia implies a more formal dress, such as a wedding dress or a ball gown? Thanks!

Dictionaries are probably going to list the two as synonymous, but if you want to dig into the actual usage, the distinction you made seems right to me.

Thanks for the clarification! You are right, when I checked a dictionary they showed as synonyms. However, when I checked ‘suknia’ on Google images, it mostly showed wedding gowns and other dresses (gowns) for formal occasions.
