Is fermare used in this way? To stop as in to stop by someplace? First time I have seen this.

Definition 3.b of fermare on Treccani seems to apply here -
Trattenersi in qualche posto o con qualcuno: debbo fermarmi in ufficio fino a tardi ; s’era fermato a parlare col portiere .
If you change that second example to the future tense then it would be similar to this sentence i.e. si fermerà a parlare col portiere - “He will stop (by) to talk to the doorman.”
