Is “guanto” referring specifically to a rubber glove here?

An interesting thought indeed. Being in the singular, un guanto di gomma certainly comes to mind;-)

Why? There a various kinds of gloves, which are often used single-handed.
E.g. cut protection for butchers, heat protection for glass blowers …
In an industrial context, this might be any glove, of course including a rubber one.

You’re quite right, of course, a risqué sense of humour took over;-)

The rather threatening tweak of “one rubber glove” often appeared in saucy English comedies of yesteryear. These days someone might be offended Aaagh!
