I think this translation may be wrong.

This is translated “My mother’s going to kill me.” but leo.org translates “jmdm. das Fell über die Ohren ziehen” as “to take someone for a ride”, which in English means to deceive someone.

Can a native German speaker chime in, have I interpreted this correctly?

The basic meaning is “My mom will scold me.”
So yes, I think “My mom is going to kill me” is an appropriate translation.
This is definitely not about deceiving someone.
