Ma tu hai qualche merito pratico o ti sei limitato ad inculcare loro il vero spirito di educazione civica?

English translation

Do you actually have any practical merit or have you merely been trying to give them a sense of the true spirit of polite society?

The cloze word here is “inculcare”, which, if I select it, shows a Google Translate definition of “inculcate”, which I also had to look up, and seems to correspond to “instill” (or “indoctrinate”).

Why “sei” and not “e”

The English translation is not very accurate.

“Inculcare” has a sens of “to instill forcefully or by constantly repeating a notion in someone’s mind”.

Also “polite society” does not seem a good fit for “educazione civica”, it is not abot being “polite” - one of the meaning of “educato”, but about behaving as a proper citizen.

“Educazione civica” is (also) a class at school, where you are supposed to learn about the constitution and civil rights and duties.
