Lui si era dichiarato a me di fronte alla chiesa.

English Translation

He had proposed to me in front of the church.

Lui si era dichiarato a me di fronte alla chiesa.
He had proposed to me in front of the church.

Ciao a tutti - in my mind this English sentence is saying that he asked me to marry him. But in my dictionary “dichiarare” does not correlate to “propose” but rather “to declare”. Indeed it suggests that to ask someone to marry you is fare una proposta di matrimonio
Has anyone come across “dichiare” meaning “asking someone to marry”?
Grazie mille!

Yes, Treccani cites exactly that usage:

Note that it is “dichiararsi”.
