I would like to get a French speaker’s opinion on this sentence. First, should it be “un matériau” rather than “un matériel”? My understanding is that “un matérial” means something like a piece of equipment, but I may be wrong. Second, “durable” would seem to be the better English translation of “résistant.” English “consistent” has a different meaning. Thanks.
Regarding the first question, you are right about matériau being the correct word. cf wiktionnary: “matériel” → equipement , while “matériau” → matter with which smthing is made
Regarding the second one; it seems to me that the problem is with the english sentence, rather than the french one. Consistent seems odd to use on a material.
To my understanding, resistant (and as far as I can see, oxford’s definition seems to say that) just means in english that it, well, resists. So both durable and résistant could be translations, as durable means that it resists time (so, persistent, maybe? - but it doesn’t seem to apply to material), while “résistant” means that it can withstand some physical action (like fire resistant, for example)
