L'enfant trouva enfin ses pieds.

English Translation

The child found his feet at last.

Feet are usually attached permanently to the ankles.
So, what exactly is meant here?
Toe sucking? Walking? A spine? Something metaphysical?

I wonder whether it’s about stopping stumbling.

I’ve never heard this be used as an expression. Neither in french nor in english… Maybe something to do with “Find his footing”? Or maybe from a children’s fairytale in which a child loses its feet?

I see however that the english sentence is marked as “Tanaka corpus” on Tatoeba, so maybe it’s a japanese saying
