Provare can mean “experience” or “feel”, so perhaps an alternative translation would be: She felt a vague sense of guilt.

I could be wrong, but I believe “provare” sometimes means “to feel”, similar to sentirsi. Provare usually means “to try”, so it might sound weird. One of the first phrases I learned from Memrise back when I was a beginner was “provare dolore” - to feel pain. I struggled with this one too and had to look it up. You could also use “sentirsi dolore”, I suppose. Both are correct, if I’m not mistaken.
