I was surprised that there seems to be no “la nuova interna”, but I can find “interna” only as an adjective.
Working at a university I do not want to be wrong at these occasions.

Are the words stagista and tirocinante commonly used for intern?

I would say it’s a wrong translation, we don’t use interno/a.
As DB suggests, stagista or tirocinante are correct and commonly used.

Hi. My trusty translator gives “la nuova stagista” but perhaps il nuovo interno is to appeal to those who prefer actor invece di attrice or doctor invece di dottoressa. I know what I prefer
