Shouldn’t this simply be “Let’s get some food.”? Is there some clue here that makes it “lunch” that I’m not noticing?

It seems to me that “Let’s get some food” should also work, since I think you’re right - there’s not really any indication what time of day or meal it is.

You usually mean something cooked when you speak of ‘essen gehen’. And since lunch is the time when most Germans eat something cooked it is the more exact translation for this phrase. But ‘Let’s get some food’ would also work despite it being more general.
