La strada costeggia il fiume.

English Translation

The road parallels the river.

Maybe “runs alongside” would be a better alternative?

I think “parallels” would be “correre parallelo”?

Can’t you say “The road coasts along the river?”

Looks to me like it has the same root.

Costeggia - to run alongside (and several other similar meanings). Tbh I’ve not heard the expression “coasts along the river”.

I think the Italian is fine with “costeggia”, it’s just the English translation that’s not so good, as David suggests.

Right. I don’t think I ever heard “parallels” used as a verb, but hey, you learn something new every day!

The Italian sentence uses “costeggia” in a natural way. It comes from “costa”, which means “coast”, but also side (as in the side of a road, a wall, or a hill). So “to run along” seems a good translation.
