Kala ei voi ikinä löytää vettä eikä ihminen voi ikinä löytää Jumalaa.

English Translation

The one thing that a fish can never find is water; and the one thing that man can never find is God.

I am puzzled by the use of ‘löytää’ here. If it means ‘find’, then the second half of the sentence is ‘man will never find God’ which surely is not the intended meaning.

This looks like a bad translation from English, as it completely ignores “the one thing”.

BTW, the English sentence’s Tatoeba page says that it’s a quote by somebody called Eric Butterworth.

Ha, I started writing a comment about ‘the one thing’ but then when I came to suggesting a better translation I couldn’t make sense out of the use of ‘löytää’!

EDIT: just had a look at the Tatoeba page you linked to. Yeah, so the original quote did indeed contain ‘the one thing’.
