Actually, I think the indicative should be used here. Compare these two sentences:

  • J’espère vraiment que vous avez raison. → Indicative

  • Je souhaite vraiment que vous ayez raison. → Subjonctive

tldr: In declarative sentences, “espérer que” is typically followed by the indicative.

thanks yottapolyglot, i was thinking the same thing but didn’t want to make a definitive assertion that might mislead or confuse other students.
