Jede Woche legt Frau Tanaka ein bisschen Geld auf die hohe Kante.

English Translation

Each week, Mrs. Tanaka saves a little money for a rainy day.

“She puts money on the high ledge”? Is that like figuratively keeping a jar full of money on a high shelf, so it’s out of convenient reach?

Something like that.
As far as I know, the origin of this medieval - but still popular - expression is not clear.
Maybe it is because some canopy beds had a secret compartment for money in the wooden construction of the canopy.
