I’d say that, in the context of a game “la revanche” is just a return game. Outside of this context, it might be translatable as revenge, but I would rather translate revenge as “vengeance”

In English, at least around here, people do talk about getting revenge after being defeated by someone else in a sport context. “Let’s play another game so I can get my revenge“ - implying that the speaker just lost the game. It’s a little unsportsmanlike to leave after winning a game and not give the other person and chance to “get back at you“. Larousse is saying to use revanche for that kind of context.
Oh, ok. To me, using getting revenge just to play a return game sounded a bit harsh (if I had to say something, I would have probably said, have a rematch, or along those line), but good to know it can also be used like that. Thanks!

I think the French are masters of understatement. I would like to learn how to do that.
I think in the Southern United States, people are more diplomatic like that. In the Northern US, a lot of people of people value directness and think being too understated can sound a bit snide (if it sounds unkind).
