Is this really a translation of recontrer? to find?

It looks like a bad translation, made by someone who knows Spanish better than French. The edit history on Tatoeba shows that it was originally written “encontres” (probably influenced by Spanish encuentres), which was later corrected to “rencontres”, without anybody looking at the English.
