I had the same question! Quelque chose is an invariant pronoun and is always masculine. However, there is some debate about this on the internet, even amongst francophones!

It’s more elegant and euphonic to say in French:
“quelque chose sur quoi écrire”,
pour éviter ce masculin grammaticalement correct mais un peu déplaisant à l’oreille.
On the other hand:
“un petit quelque chose”
is very commonly used and easy on the ear.
