Is “reta” the best word for annoying someone?

It’s close, but I would say irritera or störa. Att reta mostly means to tease: “Han retar mig (han retas med mig) för att jag är tjock”. “Att reta upp någon” is to make somebody angry. “Jag retar mig på dig”: you annoy me.

to be annoyed sounds less strong than to be vexed.

In my opinion, att reta sounds too strong for “just” annoying somebody (for example, with silly questions) rather than provoking/vexing somebody.

My preference would be to either:

  • use störa instead of reta (like you said)
  • use make me furious instead of annoy me

That’s my (non-native Swedish speaker) understanding at least.
