Intuitively, I would have translated “to give up” or “to abandon” with “att ge upp” or perhaps “uppge”. I wouldn’t have thought of “överge”.

I understand your thinking, but no. The Swedish for “hand over” is “överlämna”. For “abandon”, “överge” is the best word, “uppge” is to give a piece of information (“uppge sitt namn”), and “ge upp” is to surrender (give up).
