I also understand ‘purse’ as a small handbag, not a ‘wallet’.
Maybe it’s a difference between American and British English.
The British seem to tend to mean a wallet by “purse”, the American a handbag.

You could also translate purse as börs, but that’s a bit old-fashioned or childish.
