Is ‘ledighet’ really the same as vacation?
The Swedish word for vacation is semester, and it usually refers to the long summer vacation. For holidays, when it comes to being off from work, ledigheten is short for helgledigheten, but out of context it just means you’re off from work for some reason.

It is another Swedish word that confuses me because we have it in Danish as well but with a slightly different meaning. If you are ‘ledig’ in Denmark, it usually means you are unemployed but it can also mean ‘available’, as in ‘Jeg er ledig fredag eftermiddag’, ‘I am available Friday afternoon’. ‘Ledigheden’ definitely refers to unemployment.
