It was a pleasant, lively, natural scene; a beautiful day, a retired spot; and two girls, quite unconstrained and careless, danced in the freedom and gaiety of their hearts.

Finnish Translation

Näky oli virkistävä, eloisa, luonnollinen; kaunis päivä, syrjäinen soppi ja kaksi tyttöä, vapaina ja huolettomina, pistivät tanssien vapauttaan ja hilpeyttään juhlistaen.

Carefree, not “careless” LOL

Careless does have this additional sense, although it’s literary/old-fashioned:

“Good-humored, easy, and careless, he presided over his whale-boat as if the most deadly encounter were but a dinner, and his crew all invited guests.” Moby Dick

The semicolon should be replaced by a colon, in both sentences, IMO.

A quick search online tells me it’s Dickens. Probably best just to accept his punctuation and word choice!
