Io suppongo che lei era felice allora.

[details=“English Translation”]I suppose that she was happy then.[/details] Shouldn’t “essere” be conjugated in the subjunctive here (fosse)? The phrase is introduce by “che,” and “supporre” isn’t the same as “sapere.” Would one be free to choose either tense?

Not really, no. “Supporre” introduces uncertainty/doubt about the statement so you should say “Suppongo che allora lei fosse felice.”
