Ciao @morbrorper I tend to think of litigare - to argue, and discutere - to discuss, mainly as I feel litigare is stronger.

“Litigare” is stronger than “discutere”.
A “discussione” can be anything from friendly to very animated, and voices can be raised, but a “litigio” can also result in physical assault.

It is easy to understand and to remember, because a “litigation” is much more than a “discussion” in English.
However, I am not sure about the use of “litigazione” vs. “litigo” in Italian. Is the first also a technical term in law and the second generally used?

I didn’t really know the word “litigazione” before looking it up now. 
So it is not in general use (at least anymore), it is strictly a legal term.
“Litigio” (note the “i” after the “g” that makes the g a palatal consonant), or “lite” (which is a bit more formal) are the commonly used term for an argument, or a quarrel or a fight.
