Ciao. Perhaps it’s too definite to warrant a “credessi” regardless of the che. Vedremmo
“Credessi” also feels ok here, as the sentence is doubting/distancing from the statement “ci credevo”.
The “credessi” version feels more formal, as we tend to use more complicated expressions in formal situations.
