I am not a native Portuguese speaker, but from what I can tell, “informar” can be used with either a direct or an indirect object. If it’s an indirect object, then “a” + “aquela” combine to form “àquela”.
It seems to me that “informar” used with a direct object can be mapped to the English “inform”, while using it with an indirect object can be mapped to the English “tell”. However, just as the meanings of both “inform” and “tell” overlap, the meaning of “informar” with a direct vs. indirect object overlaps as well.
I’ll ask a native Portuguese speaker whether what I’ve said is true.
