Indossava un vestito elegante.

English Translation

She was wearing a fancy dress.

“She was wearing an elegant dress.” Um, not stava indossando? I expected indossava to mean she wore and stava indossando to be used for she was wearing.

It is my understanding that in Italian the continuous tense is optional. Here, the use of the imperfect is enough to convey the same meaning.

Also “un costume” for a *fun fancy dress. In GB *fancy dress means dressing up as a clown, a banana, anything a bit comical.
Indossava or stava indossando? Indossava - she wore … Stava indossando - she was wearing …? Will have a word with our madrelingua.

Come to think of it, couldn’t “stava indossando un vestito” be read as “she was putting on a dress”?

Ehilà Morbrorper, unless it is “stava *mettendo un vestito”? Perhaps it’s all about context again. I’m with you re the Imperfect, it is also more “elegant” Auguri…
