The poor child was born deaf and dumb.
The Italian dictionary defines “tardo” as slow, slow-witted, or late. I’m reluctant to use the word dumb in English and even less comfortable using tardo in Italian. It appears that the more commonly-used word is “muto,” but I would probably say “sordo” and leave it at that.
