What are your thoughts on this sentence please? “Miserabile” is “brute, lowlife, scum” according to Word Reference, whereas the English “miser” in the answer translates to “avaro, tirchio, taccagno, spilorcio”…
Strange one I think!
Two other translators give “the miserable one” so that might put a different complexion on the sentence. Interesting!
il miserabile = il poverotto = the poor/ wretched man
I might add that I have an Italian edtion of Hugo’s Les Misérables with the title “I miserabili”.
According to wiki English titles are The Wretched, The Miserable Ones, The Poor Ones, The Wretched Poor, The Victims, and The Dispossessed (if the French title is not used).
Hugo would turn in his grave if you would translate it as the “The brutes” or “The scum”. 
Absolutely no offence meant to the venerable Monsieur Hugo! I suspect that the original sentence is wrong and that miserabile and miser are false friends…

You’re so right. A bit off-topic but I just have to say that “Les Miserables” is, for me, still the best musical ever and a great story. I really must read the book in Italian.
