Interestingly, “faire signe de tête” can mean to nod or shake one’s head…

faire un signe de tête à quelqu’un
a. [affirmatif] to nod to somebody
b. [négatif] to shake one’s head at somebody

You can also use:

  • faire oui de la tête = to nod
  • faire non de la tête = to shake one’s head

Il me fit oui de la tête en passant.

(Faire un signe de tête can also be used as a non-verbal hello.)
