To add onto that. A couple of points:

  • because Larousse seems to only mention the process (to get high), it might be useful to point out that, it can also refer to the state (to be high, wasted), like in the cloze (être défoncé)
  • I feel it can also be used for alcohol, not only for (hard) drugs.

In the US, we might also say “wasted“ to mean drunk or high or stoned, although each has a slightly different connotation, at least around here in the midwest.

If that’s the case, I’d say wasted seems to match pretty well with défoncé.

And now that I think about it (since this is already not formal at all, it won’t hurt), you can add a layer of informality with the verlan: “il est fonce-de” (*note: since this very much not normative french, I’m not quite sure how you’d write it, but I have heard it be said)
