Ich werde aus ihr nicht schlau.

English Translation

I can’t really read her.

A little help putting the pieces together here, bitte?

The expression is marked as Umgangsprache or in other words colloquial.

At the heart of the expression is schlau which simply means clever. So, I’d literally translate the sentence as: I become from her not clever.

Closer to what we might say in English is: I can’t make her out. which is also pretty colloquial.

How about “I can’t comprehend her.” And could that be thrown back into German using “ausmachen”?

Another translation would be:

Ich werde aus ihr nicht schlau. - I can’t make heads or tails of her.

or more generally:
Ich werde daraus nicht schlau. - I can’t make heads or tails of it.
