At the heart of the expression is schlau which simply means clever. So, I’d literally translate the sentence as: I become from her not clever.

Closer to what we might say in English is: I can’t make her out. which is also pretty colloquial.

How about “I can’t comprehend her.” And could that be thrown back into German using “ausmachen”?

Ich werde aus ihr nicht schlau. - I can’t make heads or tails of her.

or more generally:
Ich werde daraus nicht schlau. - I can’t make heads or tails of it.
