Ich muss nach dem Doktor schicken.

Spanish Translation

Tengo que llamar al médico.

Is schicken still used as anrufen? or is out-dated?

Two issues with this sentence:

  • it’s somewhat outdated
  • it doesn’t have exactly the same meaning

“nach jemandem schicken” means “to send for someone”. In other words, to ask a doctor (or to make someone else ask a doctor) to come here. It’s not the same as to simply make a phone call, make your appointment with the doctor (or whatever), and then hang up, and then visit the doctor’s office a week later.

Probably no (young) person would say “Schicke nach einem Doktor” to a bystander if her best friend suddenly collapses. You would simply say “Hole einen Doktor” or “Rufe einen Doktor”.

Thank you! I am going to make a note on this one to remember that holen is a better fit nowadays.
