Is grad short for gerade? I looked it up in the dictionary and found nothing.

Yeah. I think it’s a bit slangy, but I’ve heard it a lot. In particular, I’ve heard it in song lyrics when you need a one-syllable word instead of a three syllable word. I wouldn’t use it in formal writing.

Yes. It’s a misspelling of “gerade”, similar to how some people write “prolly” instead of “probably”. Or perhaps a better comparison: doin’ instead of doing.

“gerade” in this sense is simply another word for “jetzt” (now) or “at the moment”.
