Ich hoffe von dir zu hören.

English Translation

I hope to hear from you.

Shouldn’t there be a comma there in German? This is two separate sentence clauses, isn’t it? So shouldn’t it be “Ich hoffe, von dir zu hören”?

A few years ago, the comma would have been mandatory.
Nowadays, in this kind of “Infinitiv mit zu” sentences you can use it but you do not have to.
I would use it, but maybe I am just too old to change.

Rules are compilcated:

However, when I see how many mistake my students make in this area, as a non-native-speaker you should not care too much.

Interesting, thank you! I was taught that the comma is always mandatory when using multiple sentence clauses. Nice to know that my information is a little out of date!
