“Ich habe für dich gewählt.” sounds a bit ambiguous, as in, I voted in your stead (which would be illegal, unless they have the right/permission to do so, at least In Germany), which “stimmen” cannot mean in this context.
Though it’s true that “wählen” is used much more often than “stimmen”, especially in spoken German. Though partly it’s also because “wählen” is not only used for elections/votings.
I think the most common way to say the supposed meaning might be “Ich habe dich gewählt.” At least that’s how I would say it in German.

“wählen” can mean both voting and choosing, while “stimmen” is only voting.
Morgen finden Wahlen statt. - Elections will take place tomorrow.
Ich gehe zur Wahl. - I go to the elections. / I’m going to vote.
Ich wähle Partei X. - I vote for party X.
Ich wähle das grüne Hemd. - I choose the green shirt.
Ich stimme für Partei X. - I vote for party X.
Ich habe meine Stimme abgegeben. - I cast my vote.
So, in the context of elections, both “wählen” and “stimmen” are synonymous, but without context, “wählen” can be ambiguous.
