Ich bin dankbar für Veteranen.

English Translation

I am thankful for veterans.

Does this sentence sounds strange and weird? LIke I am thankful to someone for bringing some veterans in for a party or something. So if I were thankful to the veterans themselves I would use Dativ, wouldn’t I? For example,
“Ich bin den Veteranen dankbar für ihren Mut und ihren Einsatz zur Verteidigung unseres Landes.”

Please correct me if I am wrong. Maybe it is just a grammar being not quite precise and mean different thing depending on what is the most plausible.

I agree it sounds weird. “dankbar für Veteranen” sounds like “thankful for their existence”.

And your example is perfectly valid and natural.
