I don’t understand what the “det er” is doing in this sentence. If anyone can give some insight, that would be very helpful!
“Det er sånn det er” is roughly “It is so it is”, a bit of Nordic linguistic redundancy.

Ah, thank you! Phrasing it that way makes it much clearer. I suppose it’s related to the way English uses “so it is”, or possibly “it is what it is”.
