Hon kan vare sig läsa eller skriva.

“She cannot write or read”

Should this not be “she can neither read nor write” ?

It’s a free translation from the English, but technically you’re right.

English Translation

She can neither read nor write.

i think true translate:’‘hon kan varken sig läsa eller skriva’’ because vare:vare [²v’a:re]
Användning: gammal form av verbet “är”((LEXIN))

That is a mixture that doesn’t work.

You can say any of these:

  • Hon kan varken läsa eller skriva. (The simplest choice)
  • Hon kan inte vare sig läsa eller skriva.
  • Hon kan vare sig läsa eller skriva. (Not everyone accepts “vare sig” without “inte”)

this is so complicated for me . :sleepy:

As long as you understand the patterns, you’ll be fine. Until you know how to use “varken” you can simply say “Hon kan inte läsa eller skriva”. The basic meaning is the same.
